Leadership – Be the “Glue” That Holds Your Team Together
To be a dentist you must know how to fill cavities, perform root canals, but most importantly be a successful leader. The path to leadership isn’t an easy one. There will be good times, stressful times, and dreadful times, but an extraordinary leader is always able to lead a team to success, regardless of the situation at hand.
The success or failure of a dental practice depends entirely on the dental team. Teams that thrive do so because of successful leadership. A great leader has a strong vision for growth and knows how to communicate it clearly throughout the office. They discuss goals, performances and expectations. Great leaders are optimistic and encourage team members to support each other every day. We’ve come up with a few useful tips to get you on the path to becoming a better leader:
Tip #1: Create a culture for your business. Be clear about what type of culture you want. Is it laid back, elegant, or fun?
Tip #2: Hire smart and develop team members with similar work ethics and values. Team members that are on the same page will have an easier time working together in sync.
Tip #3: Expand your skillset continuously and invest in teaching your team new skills.
Tip #4: Accept responsibility. Do not blame or fault others. Accept mistakes as your own and provide no excuses.
Tip #5: Integrity is key. Keep your word. If you say something, do it and deliver on your commitments.
Tip #6: Be authentic. When you are open, honest, and truthful your team members will see that and respect you for it. They will be able to come to you with questions and concerns without feeling judged or ridiculed.
Tip #7: Provide feedback. Feedback and assessments provide the team members with constructive criticism. The more timely your feedback, the better your team, making your business more effective and profitable. Feedback gives your team members the chance to grow.
Some dentists are in it to get rich, buy a fancy house, and vacation in Bora Bora. Real leaders have a drive to accomplish a true vision with a true purpose. You have to be more than a boss who directs them; you must also be a leader who inspires them.
As a leader, how do you measure up? Be honest. How would your dental team rate you? Whether you think you are a rock star leader or you are just getting your feet wet, there is always room for improvement.
