Setting Your Goals – Expectations & Benefits
When it comes to goal setting, you can’t just pick any old goal. You also have to think about what benefits you expect to get from these goals and the journey to achieving them.
Expectations are important. Is your expectation that if you become a successful actress you will become famous? Or if that you become a successful actress you will be following your bliss? The driving force is completely different for both goals and can influence your decisions and choices. Don’t lie to yourself! Be honest with what you’re hoping to receive.
You will need to ask yourself the basic questions, what is it that you expect to get from achieving that yummy delicious goal? Is it more free time? Job satisfaction? A closer relationship with your spouse, partner or significant other? More time to pursue an advanced degree? Enough money to buy a pet monkey?
Any or all of these things are great goals, but this one very important thing you must factor into the equation; balance. It’s pretty simple when you think of it, investing some time in one thing will ultimately take up time from another. I know it’s hard to believe you don’t have 60 hours a day and you have to actually do something like sleep. So you need to factor in what you’re willing to give up as well.
Don’t make a promise to get more work/life balance and then squander that balance with poor planning. This kind of willy-nilly approach will leave you in a worse condition than where you started. And what’s the point of going backwards?
Keeping expectations realistic is as important. The chances that you are going to be able to dedicate so many hours a week to your new career and still have plenty left over for family is slim to none. The chances that you are going to become the next president if you’ve never been involved in law or politics is practically nil. But you could start out running for city council and work your way up. See what I mean?
Appropriate time frames are important too. Even for you ambitious types! Just because you want to conquer the world doesn’t mean you can do it in a day. Sometimes we can create a perfect picture in our mind that is unreachable in the time frame we set.
It may be hard trying to switch up your goals, but don’t forget you are never alone. Seek out friends and family and ask them for their support. Once you’ve got everything all squared away, you’ll find achieving your goals to be a snap!
