Learn to Balance Your Dental Career and Home Life Better Than A Gymnast

Trying to balance your work as a dental professional, life, self, and family can be a challenge tougher than climbing Mount Everest. Somehow it seems that work life or home life is always encroaching on the other and causing problems at work, at home, and many times both. Not to mention stressing you out! But fret not. There are ways to balance all aspects of your life so instead of feeling frazzled and like you’re short changing something or someone, you’ll feel whole and calm. The following five tips are great options to help with balancing working in your dental practice and home.

Make a Schedule

The best thing to do when trying to balance work and home is to make a schedule. Creating a schedule will be well worth it. Having a set schedule for your daily tasks and sticking to it like a gum sticks to your shoe, will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. When your scheduled time is up, move on to the next thing. This will make your life significantly easier and you will know which activities fit into which time frame. Just make sure you stick to your schedule. No ifs, ands, or butts.

Share Responsibilities

Many times work and home responsibilities can become overwhelming because one person is handling more of the responsibilities than the other. Have a round table discussion with your fellow dental professionals in your practice so that everyone is doing their part. Divvy up chores at home between your partner and children. If everybody chips in, you’ll have more time to spend together. Think of all the Scrabble games you’ll be able to play as a family!

Leave Work at Work

OK so this one is a wee bit hard. But if you’re bringing work home from the dental office, you’re allowing work to invade your home time thereby ruining your balance. You’ll be like a seesaw stuck one end. Unless it’s a dire situation, leave work at work! And if you work from home, know when to close that office door and relax with your family. After all some things should be sacred.

Dedicate Weekends to Home Activities

A great way to keep home and work separate is to always focus on home activities during weekends or at least on days off from work if you happen to work on weekends. That means NO talking about work! When you’re at home allow yourself to be at home. When you’re old and gray its the little moments with your loved ones that you will remember. Not the daily grind. So let it all go and relish in your family and friends.

Plan Like Your Life Depends on It

The best way to balance work and home is to always make a plan. Do you think the president would go to war without a plan? Or that Taylor Swift would go on tour without a plan? Planning is what helps you stay organized, on track, and balanced. It might feel strange at first, but if you start planning things out and follow the plan you will be surprised how easy you can find a balance. Before you know it, you’ll be less stressed and more Zen like a Buddhist monk.
